🌌 “Walking Among the Stars: A Morning in Dr. Sua’s Astronomical World”

The morning light in Seremban was soft as I walked into Chung Hua High School.

The campus was quiet, almost contemplative, as though it knew a meaningful conversation was about to unfold.

The door to the principal’s office opened gently.

Dr. Sua Sin Zang greeted me with the calm brightness of someone who has spent years looking upward.

We sat across the table, sunlight spilling across its surface like a quiet invitation.

Our conversation began with telescopes— their lenses, their precision, their ability to gather ancient light.

From there, it flowed naturally into nebulae, astrophotography,

and the philosophy behind bringing astronomy into a school environment.

He showed me his personal astrophotography collection.

In the stillness of the office, those images felt almost alive—

as if the universe had momentarily stepped into the room with us.

He spoke of his academic journey:

from medicine to astronomy,

from the UK to Australia to China.

A single night under the Milky Way at the Grand Canyon

changed the trajectory of his life.

He chose the stars.

And he brought that choice back to his students.

Under his leadership, astronomy at Chung Hua is not merely a subject.

It is a culture, a lens through which students learn to see the world.

They speak with NASA engineers, join international science camps,

and learn to photograph the sky with their own hands.

In that office, the meeting table felt less like furniture

and more like a bridge—

a place where ideas could travel from Earth to the cosmos.

As I left, one thought lingered:

Some educators teach knowledge.

Some open the universe.

Dr. Chua does both.

“Physics, Life, and the Rhythm of Nature”

Today, I visited Mr. Chia Shang Cai, a physics master and fellow alumnus, seeking insights for the multi‑layer swinging bell system at the farm.

In just two hours, he unfolded the beauty of physics—

from pendulum motion and damping

to how physical principles quietly shape our daily life, our economy, and even the way nature moves.

Physics, through his words, became alive:

the sway of a tree branch,

the balance of a hanging bell,

the flow of water across the farm.

A former principal, Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Physics, and founder‑advisor of the Independent Chinese School Science Camp, he spent 36 years teaching.

Now retired, he devotes his remaining years to bringing physics to the public.

He gifted me his books “Physics in Life, Life in Physics” and “Physics Helper”,

and lent me Liu Cixin’s The Three‑Body , insisting that I must read it.

In him, I saw a man rooted in the soil of the people,

yet carrying a mind that reaches the stars.

Fizik bukan sekadar formula,

tetapi cara daun bergerak,

cara loceng berayun,

cara air mengalir di ladang.

Beliau pernah menjadi pengetua cemerlang, Felo Persatuan Fizik Malaysia, serta pengasas dan penasihat Kem Sains Sekolah Menengah Persendirian Cina.

Selepas 36 tahun mengajar, beliau kini menumpukan hidupnya untuk memasyarakatkan pendidikan fizik.

Beliau menghadiahkan saya dua buah buku dan meminjamkan novel The Three‑Body .

namun hidupnya dipenuhi cahaya ilmu.

A Morning Departure

29/10/25

I woke up at six today for the 9 AM train to Jogja.

Before leaving Bandung, I wanted to revisit the Chinese commercial district.

Crossing a railway bridge, I looked down and saw four or five tracks glowing under the morning sun—an unexpectedly beautiful sight.

Street Traffic & the “People’s Traffic Officer”

Motorcycles filled the streets as usual.

At an intersection, I saw the same uncle directing traffic. Locals joked, “No idea where the police went, so these uncles help out.”

Drivers would tip him afterward—a small, grassroots system of order.

Warmth of the Chinese Community

After walking about three kilometers, I saw a group of Indonesian Chinese practicing qigong.

Meeting fellow Chinese abroad always brings warmth, so I stopped to take photos.

Many shops were Chinese-owned, and the “Bandung Hokkien Association” building stood proudly—a symbol of early immigrants’ struggles and unity.

Encounter with Elderly Chinese Locals

Further up the road, many Chinese elders and youths were exercising.

I approached a group of elderly men and asked if they spoke Chinese.

They smiled, “The older ones usually do.”

We chatted and took a photo together.

Hearing familiar language abroad always warms the heart.

A Bowl of Familiar Comfort

I stepped into a Chinese noodle shop.

After twenty days in Indonesia, I finally tasted something that felt like home.

The owner was warm and friendly, and we took a photo together.

That bowl of noodles reminded me that even far from home, comfort can still be found.

Scenery from the Train

As the sun rose, I made my way to the station.

The train departed on time. Once we left the city, the scenery opened up—

majestic mosques, terraced fields, distant volcanoes…

like traveling through a moving landscape painting.

抵达Jogja|Arrival in Jogja

By evening, the train finally arrived in Jogja.

A city I had long dreamed of visiting—

because here stands the world‑famous Buddhist monument: Borobudur.

Bandung – Day One

Morning Breakfast

In the morning, I walked about 300 meters from the inn to a roadside stall for breakfast. A steaming bowl of porridge, paired with crispy prawn fritters, and a cup of sugar-free coffee. The porridge was full of ingredients, light yet flavorful, and truly satisfying.

Awakening of the City

Later, I wandered along the nearby streets and noticed that bamboo scaffolding was still used for building repairs. At a traffic circle stood the sculpture Tugu Pertigaan Kedung Pakuan—a majestic horse beneath a domed arch, striking in design. Beside it were the Governor’s residence and Kedung Pakuan Park.

The streets grew lively, filled with people, motorcycles, and cars weaving through. Vendors pushed their carts to set up stalls at designated spots, adding to the vibrant rhythm of daily life.

Journey to the Volcano

At seven o’clock, the guide arrived at the inn. Today’s plan was to visit a volcanic crater. At a crossroads, the car stopped at a red light where street performers played guitars, and the driver handed them a small tip.

We passed through crowded city streets and entered the highway, heading straight for the countryside. On both sides lay freshly harvested rice fields, with volcanoes rising in the distance—a picturesque rural scene.

Kawah Putih 的奇景 The Wonders of Kawah Putih

By nine o’clock, we reached the entrance of Kawah Putih. The gateway was crafted with wooden beams radiating outward in a semicircular arch, a design both simple and distinctive.

Inside, we arrived at the crater lake at 2,194 meters above sea level. Mist drifted across the surface, turning it ghostly white. The volcano was alive, with thick smoke rising from one side—an awe-inspiring sight. Around the lake, yellow sulfur crystals formed, collected by locals to make souvenirs and soap, said to help with skin ailments. Of course, I took plenty of photos here.

Then I climbed a small path, about fifty meters higher, and looked down into the crater. The view from above revealed yet another striking perspective.

Tea Gardens and Rainy Views

Light rain began to fall, and the air turned cold. I descended slowly along another path, passing through tea plantations. The tea bushes lined the slopes like a vast green carpet, breathtakingly beautiful.

We stopped at a lakeside restaurant. With rain falling outside, I sipped a hot coffee while gazing at the misty lake—it felt like being inside a living landscape painting.

Echoes of History

Returning to the city, we passed the Asian-African Conference memorial and museum. Unfortunately, it was closed that day, so I missed the chance to visit this building

Cultural Footnote

(Bandung Conference, 1955)

City and Night

In the evening, I explored Bandung’s shopping district. There was a Chinatown, with Chinese signs everywhere and restaurants serving a variety of dishes. The older generation of Chinese residents still spoke Mandarin, while the younger ones mostly used Indonesian and English.
